- SLUG: PRESS CREDIBILITY
-
- Israel's media is not involved in the question of press
- credibility around the world. The Israeli press is
- covering the Gulf war, basing itself on American sources
- but turning to its own Israeli (usually military or
- intelligence) sources to try to determine whether the
- Americans are providing full information. Sometimes there
- are strikintg differences: Israeli sources are feeding
- information to the Israeli press information that is at
- odds with what the Americans are saying. For instance,
- when the americans were saying that most if not all of
- the Scud missile launchers had been detroyed, the Israeli
- sources were saying to the Israeli source this was not
- true and that most of the missile launching sites were
- still functioning. Since Israel just suffered its fifth
- missile attack only two and a quarter hours ago, as seven
- missiles were fired on the country (with at least 26
- wounded), it would appeared that the Israeli sources are
- providing more reliable information than the Americans,
- at least on this point.
-
- Israeli sources have been cautioning since the beginning
- of the war that the American euphoria expressed in the
- first day or two was unfounded. The Israeli media has
- reflected that cautious approach.
-
- Also: the Israeli press has taken something of a
- sensationalist view of the war with the afternoon
- newspapers Ma'ariv and Yediot Aharonot offering huge
- black bold headlines. The first day that the Americans
- began the war, Ma'ariv headlined "War" across the top
- part of the page.
-
- Israel television has expanded its coverage by offering
- an hour of morning news and news broadcasts every few
- hours around the clock. Israel radio has undergone a
- revolutionary change due to the war: the State-run Israel
- Radio has united its staff with the Israel Defense Forces
- radio station's staff and together they are broadcasting
- from one studio using joint staffs (one from Israel
- Radio, one from Galei Zahal, the IDF radio station).
-
- It should be taken into account that both TV and radio
- in `thjis country are being used as part of the civil
- defense system. They are the ones to announce that an
- alert has begun. The r radio is the chief source used by
- the civil defense authorities, and the IDF Spokesman
- comes on the radio at intervals during an alert. He has
- been greeted with a huge amount of credibility and this
- has enhanced the credibility of radio and TV (he appears
- on TV often too).
